sonex vs Matomo

Matomo is the most complete open-source analytics product there is, and the one that most directly replaces enterprise Google Analytics. It is also the heaviest tool in this comparison set by a wide margin, its most useful reports sit behind the Business tier on Cloud, and it has no native payment-provider integration. sonex is narrower, lighter and reads revenue from Stripe or Polar on every plan.

Where Matomo is better

Self-hosting, properly. Core Matomo is GPLv3 and free to run forever on your own servers. If your requirement is that visitor data never touches a third party’s infrastructure, this is the answer and we do not have one. That is not a marketing position for them, it is the whole design.

Feature depth. Heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing, media analytics, form analytics, SEO reports, roll-up reporting across sites. Matomo does things we have not built and mostly do not intend to.

Report retention. Aggregated report data is kept indefinitely on Cloud. Raw data is 24 months on starter tiers, but the reports built from it do not expire.

Regulatory standing. Matomo has an approved configuration under CNIL’s consent exemption in France, which is a specific, documented regulatory position rather than a general claim. If your compliance team wants a named precedent, they have one.

Where sonex is better

Weight. 2,968 bytes against 24,015 — eight times less JavaScript. Matomo’s tracker is large because Matomo does a great deal; that is a fair trade for a site using those features and a poor one for a site that wants pageviews and revenue.

Cookieless without configuration. Matomo’s consent-free mode is something you set up and verify. Ours is the only mode there is. Both end in the same place legally; only one can be misconfigured.

Revenue from a payment provider. Matomo has ecommerce tracking driven by events you send. sonex reads Stripe or Polar directly, on every plan, from a system of record that ad blockers cannot intercept.

Funnels without a tier jump. Funnels, cohorts and session recording are Business-tier and above on Matomo Cloud. Funnels and retention are on our Pro plan.

Total cost at small scale. €29 excluding tax for 50,000 hits, before the tier that unlocks funnels, against $20 for 200,000 events with funnels included. Model it against your own volume, but for a small site the gap is real.

Time to a useful dashboard. Matomo is a platform with a plugin model and an administration surface. That is the price of its depth, and it is a price.

The hidden cost of self-hosting

Free to download is not free to run. Self-hosted Matomo means a server, a database that grows with your traffic, upgrades, backups, and someone whose job includes noticing when the archiving cron stops finishing.

For an organisation with an operations team and a data-sovereignty requirement, that is a sensible cost with a clear benefit. For a solo founder who wanted to know which page converts, it is a second product to maintain.

Choose Matomo if

• Self-hosting or strict data sovereignty is a hard requirement.
• You want heatmaps, session recording, A/B testing or form analytics in the same tool.
• You are replacing enterprise Google Analytics feature-for-feature.
• You have someone to operate it, or the Cloud budget to skip that.

Choose sonex if

• You want a hosted tool that is cookieless by construction rather than by configuration.
• Page weight matters on your site.
• You want revenue read from Stripe or Polar without instrumenting purchase events.
• You want funnels and retention without a tier upgrade, or a free plan to start on.

Matomo is the right answer to “I need to own the whole stack”. sonex is the right answer to “I need to know whether this traffic made money, and I would rather not run a server to find out”.
