sonex vs Mixpanel
Mixpanel is product analytics for teams instrumenting an app, with a 29 kB script and a Stripe integration you have to build yourself. sonex is web analytics that reads revenue natively.

Mixpanel is a serious product-analytics tool and it is not competing for the same job. Mixpanel measures what people do inside an application, using events you design. sonex measures a website and puts revenue next to the traffic, using one script tag and no event schema. People compare them because both are called analytics.
Checked against Mixpanel’s own pricing and documentation on 2026-08-17, plus a direct measurement of both scripts.

The setup difference is the real one
Mixpanel starts from a blank event schema. That is a strength for a product team: you decide what matters, name it, and the analysis follows your model rather than a vendor’s assumptions.
It is a poor fit for a website, where the questions are already known — how many people came, from where, which pages they read, and whether any of it earned money. Answering those in Mixpanel means implementing them. Answering them in sonex means adding a script tag.
Revenue
Mixpanel’s own documentation describes connecting Stripe by routing webhooks through a cloud function you write and deploy, or by using a third-party connector. It works, and it is an engineering project with an owner and a maintenance cost.
sonex takes a read-only Stripe or Polar key and reads revenue from the API. It is available on the free plan, it needs no events, and it is net of refunds.
If your revenue model is complex enough to need transformation before analysis, Mixpanel’s pipeline gives you somewhere to put that logic. If you want the number beside the traffic this afternoon, it does not.
Where Mixpanel is better
The free plan. A million events a month with unlimited seats is more generous than anything we offer, and for a small product team it is a very good deal.
Product analytics depth. Behavioural cohorts, retention on arbitrary event definitions, funnel analysis over user properties, experimentation, session replay. If you are analysing in-app behaviour, this is the right category of tool and we are not in it.
Scale. Mixpanel handles volumes that a small web-analytics product does not need to think about.
Where sonex is better
Weight. Ten times less JavaScript, which matters most on exactly the pages Mixpanel is not for — marketing and content pages measured by Core Web Vitals.
Privacy defaults. No cookies, no consent banner, no fingerprinting, no configuration required to get there.
Time to first answer. Script tag, then the dashboard already knows what to show.
Revenue without a pipeline. As above.
Web-native reports. Referrers, campaigns, a country-region-city map, and a compare mode for any two date ranges, none of which you have to define first.
Choose Mixpanel if
- You are analysing behaviour inside an application.
- You want a large free event allowance and unlimited seats.
- You have the engineering time to design an event schema and a revenue pipeline, and the analysis you need justifies it.
Choose sonex if
- You are measuring a website rather than an app.
- You want revenue beside traffic without building anything.
- Page weight, cookies or a consent banner are real constraints.
As with most product-versus-web analytics comparisons, the answer for a growing company is frequently both, with the heavy tool inside the product and something light on the public site.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Mixpanel good for a marketing website?
- It is not what it was built for. Mixpanel is event-based product analytics for applications, and getting website basics out of it means defining the events yourself. sonex reports pageviews, referrers, campaigns and revenue with one script tag and no event schema to design.
- Does Mixpanel connect to Stripe?
- Not as a turnkey integration. Mixpanel's own documentation describes routing Stripe webhooks through a cloud function you build, or using a third-party partner. sonex connects to Stripe or Polar with a read-only key on every plan.
- Which has the bigger free plan?
- Mixpanel, by a wide margin — 1,000,000 events a month free with unlimited seats, against 2,000 events a month on sonex.
- How much smaller is the sonex script?
- Measured on 2026-08-17, the Mixpanel browser library is 29,437 bytes brotli against 2,968 bytes for sonex — roughly ten times the JavaScript.
